Vivo X21: None the Worse for Wear
You probably haven’t heard about the Vivo phone until the NBA Superstar Stephen Curry started doing selfies with the Vivo V7+.
This Chinese brand didn’t ring any bell earlier, but slowly making its way to the top and compete with other brands like One Plus, Nokia, and Moto. This review of the Vivo X21 may be a little too late because this flagship was launched last March 2018. However, with all the premium brands out there, we find this mid-ranger phone didn’t get the right attention it deserves.
The Vivo X21 is a mid-range phone powered by Snapdragon 660, but not slow in other features and does not come cheap. Let’s begin!
The first concern for today’s smartphone is: does it have notch? With the X21 released in 2018, why not? This time, they made it a notch with an all-black aluminum frame and glass back with shaped edges. Making it sleek and very comfortable to hold. It’s not as fabulous as Galaxy S9, but it sits well in the non-slippery side and minimalist design.
The notch is not overall bothersome, but notch-haters still won’t find it friendly because they won’t have the option to hide it.
As previously mentioned, the X21 is powered by a 2017 processor being a mid-range phone. But, it doesn’t sound as depressing. Performance-based, you can hardly notice the difference from the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. It still operates smoothly.
This flagship comes with 3,200 mAh battery which doesn’t sound very promising but not a downside either. Most phones today can’t last two days in medium usage. So, Vivo X21 can still be your day to day phone that needs a regular every night charging.
Vivo boasts in their tagline “Camera and Music” making camera and audio a big deal when talking about Vivo phones.
There’s a “Hi-Fi” DAC on board and an audio jack. The single bottom speaker can be very loud, and the quality is greater than other mid-range phones, but not as clear and detailed compared to high-end phones.
It has a 2MP f/1.8 main camera with phase detection autofocus paired by a 5MP f/2.4 secondary camera. The front camera is also 12MP with a f/2.0 lens. Since Vivo also promotes better selfies, they can’t miss to include the beauty mode feature.
Another awesome camera-based feature is the infrared recognition function. Even though the X21 has a fingerprint sensor, there’s a better and faster way to unlock your phone. Just wake up the phone, let it detect your pretty face, and it instantly unlocks. Apparently, no matter how cool it is, it still compromises if you’re in a very bright or very dark setting. Plus, it won’t work when wearing sunglasses.
Unfortunately for Vivo X21, the software is a bit of a letdown. It has a weird interface compared to other Android phones and takes time to get used to.
The status bar looks like a disorganized underwear drawer. It is not arranged accordingly to complement the notch and because of the limited space, you only get to see one or two notifications. There are other minor issues with the UI as well. These issues turned big as they add up.
Overall, Vivo X21 has a so-so phone. This is great if you’re looking for a media phone, but don’t expect user-friendly interface as you navigate around. It can be very confusing. Nonetheless, what can you expect from a mid-range phone? If you’re willing to spend $100 to $200 for a smartphone, Vivo X21 is not a bad option.

What Customers are Saying
I called on One Click Root after my own initial attempt for root bricked my LG G4 (H81010o). If you have a new phone running the latest and more challenging software, then I recommend this service. Its well worth the money. Technician "JJ" helped me and was a smooth and very capable professional. Rarely do I pay for tech support or make endorsements so purchase with confidence, these folks are legit!
