Sony Xperia XZ2
Sony Xperia XZ2: Android P or no Android P?
Sony Xperia is a great smartphone brand as it is. The company is great for delivering excellent features highlighting on media functionality from music to photography and videography.
The company’s latest flagship, Sony Xperia XZ2, was announced earlier this year running in Android Ore. Apparently, the phone can also be used under Google’s newest version of Android – the Android P.
Google recently announced that a number of manufacturers will soon have access to Android P beta. This new and promising Android version separates the SoC’s firmware from the Android OEM software layer allowing faster updates.
Of course, Google won’t miss to include Sony Xperia XZ2, being one of today’s best Android phones. Other phones that will also be running in Android P beta are Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21, OnePlus 6, and the Essential Phone.
So, how does Android P beta look on Xperia XZ2?
As expected, Android P truly is still a beta having only 22 apps present in the initial startup and most of them are Google Apps. The extra apps that Sony usually include in their phones are missing or removed. We can’t tell for sure which is since Android P beta might not be compatible with other apps yet, or they just got rid of those extra apps for a smoother run.
The interface is pretty simple and there’s not much happening in the app drawer. If decluttering is your usual hobby, then Android P beta might be the right OS for you.
Android P beta also has this notable feature called gesture navigation. You can no longer see the home buttons at the bottom of your screen. You’ll see a swipe line, instead. Half swipe and you’ll see the recent apps while a full swipe opens the app drawer.
Adaptive brightness mode is also another interesting feature of Android P on your Sony Xperia XZ2. This is not your typical brightness sensor that turns super bright on direct sunlight and lowers down in a dark room. This memorizes your brightness habit and will change the brightness accordingly depending on how often you change it during the day.
In terms of performance, it obviously ran smoother compared to Android Oreo with all the extra apps missing in the background process. So, it’s a good thing. Some reviews also suggest that Android P beta in Xperia XZ2 is smoother than other phones using the same Android version.
So, if you’re looking for a simple phone with nothing much to do, then Sony Xperia XZ2 on Android P might just sit well in your day to day routine. However, you’ll be missing a lot of Sony features like the 3D face mapping and the super slow-mo 960fps video. These unique features are not present on Android P.
Android P is new and we’re sure Google has a lot of cool updates mapped for it. For now, expect to encounter a number of bugs and random crashing without warning. But, if you love beta testing, you can survive this phone. Who knows, you might boast it someday as an Android P pioneer once it reaches its prime.
