Huawei P20 Hybrid Zoom
There has been enough argument online on which brand has the best camera. Most Android users suggest Samsung has the best, while selfie-lovers say it’s Oppo and Vivo, which has the same owner for that matter, and professional photographers would stick to LG and Sony.
Since Samsung has the most fans, then it’s safe to say that the brand wins the majority. It’s current flagship – Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus - made a huge break in terms of camera features. Its super slow-motion capability is now the best super slow-motion feature in the market today. While the sales for the new flagship boost in its first few weeks, it showed a noticeable decline when Huawei released P20 – geared with a new flagship “Hybrid Zoom.”
So, what’s so special about Hybrid Zoom that made people change their mind? Before we answer that question, let’s look at the three types of zoom.
Optical zooming shifts mechanical glass lenses to adjust the focal length and magnifying your subject. This is known as “true zoom” lens, for the reason that it does not sacrifice the image-quality, but you need to buy multiple lenses.
This is what you usually see in DSLR and film cameras. Some smartphones boast optical zoom by using cameras with different focal lengths and switching between them to zoom in on the subject. This is the reason why modern smartphones have dual-cameras.
Digital Zoom is what we commonly see in smartphones. It is basically “zoom” defined literally. When you zoom, the camera only enlarges the image area at the center of the frame and trims away the outside edges. In result, as you zoom in, it becomes more pixelated.
Basically, when you take a photo zoomed-in, the cropped area is still available for editing. Again, it only enlarges the portion you wish to zoom.
Now, that you know the difference between optical and digital zoom, and their advantages and disadvantages, imagine these two technologies combined in a single camera.
Huawei P20’s Hybrid Zoom is not literally the combination of both, but close enough. The Hybrid Zoom uses dual cameras in an advanced wat, utilizing powerful software to mix data from two cameras at different focal lengths to maintain the best detail when zooming in that is way better quality than the basic digital zoom.
Huawei is allegedly using the Super Resolution technology. There has been no confirmation from the company, but the clues are naked to the eyes. Super Resolution is the same technology used by astronomers to decrease noise and enhance resolution when observing the stars and distant planets. Just imagine having this technology in the palm of your hands.
A test has been conducted by the Android Authority Blog comparing optical, digital and hybrid zoom. Six zoomed images were captured such as 1x uncropped, 3x uncropped, 10MP 5x digital crop, 40MP 5x digital crop, 10MP 3x optical to 5x digital crop, and 10MP 5x Hybrid Zoom. In result, the Hybrid Zoom has a better and clearer quality with less noise.
So, if you’re a photography buff and looking for a better smartphone camera experience, you might want to choose Huawei P20 for a change. Of course, real photography does not depend on the camera, but to the skill and imagination of the photographer.
